ART WORKSHOPS - Free and Open to all SOD Community Members
Thank you for your interest in our free art workshops. Out of respect for our instructors, if you choose to register, please plan to attend. Our instructors use the registration numbers to bring the correct amount of material and supplies. If your plans change, please email Emily at ehrichar@umich.edu to open your spot! Our registration forms decline submission once we reach capacity. If you would like to be on the waitlist, please email Emily. We will also do our best to accommodate walk-in participants.
September 17 in the Atrium
Weaving - September 17
Weaving Art Workshop with STAMPS Graduate, Abby Chiminski , on Thursday, September 17th from 4 - 7pm. Completing this art project should take around 1 hour. Please arrive no later than 6pm to ensure completion by 7pm. In this weaving workshop, participants will create woven coasters using upcycled yarn. This project is broken down into two different parts:
1. Upcycling fabric / old clothing into yarn
2. Learning frame loom weaving basics
Participants: please bring old clothing or fabric you are willing to cut up into yarn — t-shirts, bedding, and curtains work best. Additional donations will be provided for those who don’t bring anything.

Linoleum Block Printing - Oct. 12
Linoleum Block Printing Art Workshop with Ann Arbor Artist, Sajeev Visweswaran, on Monday, October 12th from 1 - 4pm. Completing this art project should take around 1-2 hours. Please arrive no later than 2pm to ensure completion by 4pm.

Linoleum block printing, or linocut, is a relief printmaking craft. This workshop will give a basic introduction to relief printmaking using the linocut technique. Relief printing refers to a technique where images are transferred to paper from the raised portion of a carved or etched block. In this technique, drawings are made on a linoleum block and the negative space is carved out from the desired areas. In the next stage, ink is applied on the surface using a roller. Finally, prints are taken using a manual spooning technique, which applies pressure to the ink and paper transfers the image to paper.
September 29 in the Atrium
Pewabic Tile-Glazing - Sept. 29
Try your hand at glazing tiles during these 1-hour ceramics classes led by staff from the historic Pewabic Pottery in Detroit.
Participants will choose their preferred tile design and learn to glaze like the Pewabic fabrication team. Once fired, tiles will be ready for pickup at the museum office at a later date.

Screen Printing - November 18

Screen printing refers to a technique where images are printed on any surface through a mesh screen which has an image or pattern on it. First, participants can make a pencil drawing on paper, which we will trace onto the screens. In the technique we will use a block-out solution or drawing fluid to mark the image directly on the screen. The image can be drawn with a pen or a brush. In the next stage, ink is pushed through the screen with a squeegee. This transfers the image to the printing surface. Participants can either print their design on paper or tote bag.
